Work
Gary Oldknow

2002

Finally got my work recognised by being made a member of SPAG ( see home page).

Made Two Promo Videos and a documentary style EPK for 'The Devils'; Stephen Duffy & Nick Rhodes two founder members of'80s supergroup Duran Duran -reunited to record what is effectively the first Duran Duran album, finally laying down the songs they wrote 24 years ago.

Also made 5 onstage videos for Starsailor's summer European festival tour and still found time to make videos for two Middle Eastern shows for Laser Magic. In all that I squeezed in a show projecting onto the walls of Newark Castle for EEA.

Filmed some of the recording sessions of the new and as yet unfinished Duran Duran album. The 5 original members are back together and making music as good as they ever did.

2001

Well, in January I made 3 videos for Sting's Rock In Rio concert. Going to Brazil for 3 days and then going back to england was extreme. High summer to cold winter. and then it was going to get colder. The Eastern block Duran Duran tour. Croatia, Russia and Estonia. Then before you know it I was off to the US to do two days in New York at the very start of the Duran Duran US tour.

Then all of a sudden I had no commitments for a few weeks. So I began putting my motorbike through it's paces.

Between biking I managed to squeeze in a projection onto the South African Embassy in london for Nelson Mandela with REM as the support act!

Duran dropped video from the summer Japan tour but I made up for it by getting a month long job in Kuala Lumpur as video designer for KL's top night club 12si.

Then for no obvious reason I took a 5 week filming break in Canada and the US driving through endless deserts and mountains.

August - back to England and the International Festival Of the Sea in Portsmouth

Sept. dreary fashion show tour of the shopping malls of Great Britain (yawn)

Nov. rescued a show in Birmingham for Creative Technology. After a computer meltdown I still managed to give them a perfect presentation.....Funny how you can move heaven and earth for these people and they never pay you on time...

1999 - 2000

We made a whopping 18cm x 13m long single image for Creative Technology's install for Saturday Night Fever at the London Palladium. For the past 3 years , deepvisual have created a series of short video animations for Vegetable Vision which are being used by BBC Radio 1 during outside broadcasts throughout the summer. By using only two projectors we also helped Vegetable Vision cover the millennium dome for Channel 4. By constructing a computer model of the dome we could pre distort the image in 3D making the flat artwork supplied by channel 4 look like it was lying on the surface of the millennium dome when projected. Worked closely with CMT / C. J. Spencer Associates providing scrolling projections on the International Festival of the Sea, the Lingerie Industry Awards & the Cosmopolitan Magazine Catwalk Show at Earls Court 2. We also designed and operated projections for the opening of the Liverpool Tate Gallery's Dali Exhibition for Walk The Plank. The Millennium Eve saw us in Limerick, Ireland projecting the history of the city onto the walls of King John's Castle as the last sunlight of the millennium set.. In conjunction with LCI we have projected a 150m wide image of Nelson onto chalk cliffs at Portsmouth and also the England football team onto the white cliffs of Dover. And lets not forget the job of the century, the Lycra Lingerie awards.

History:

Starting out projecting on the club scene in the early '90s deepvisual were there at the worlds first Acid House venue. Spectrum at Heaven started the whole thing off and for a brieft time seemed like it was the center of the universe. Paul Oakenfold was the resident DJ, deepvisual did the projections. Next came the legendary Shoom run by Danny Rampling, again with deepvisual on projections. Then onto 3 years working at the Fridge in Brixton. during that time we moved the visuals up from 4 projectors to a stunning 32 projector system that left the opposition blinded. Rave followed rave, Sunrise, Universe, Raindance, 32 hour days were passing as normal and we were almost relieved when the law clamped down and put a stop to the whole thing for a while. Time to start projecting on buildings.

Moving on and up, we then did our first waterscreen show. Expo 93 saw us in Korea projecting onto a fountain in the middle of a river making a massive 45m wide backdrop for the performers onstage. There followed a whole range of shows worldwide projecting onto buildings, balloons, fountains, cliff faces, monuments and castles.

The late 90's saw us move into large scale video projection and video design. Touring bands started to want projectionsnow and suddenly we were off. Sting, Bowie, Pet Shop Boys, Duran Duran,

We still found time to build up a steady business making slides and scroll films for large format projectors.
